La Alpujarra has some of the most beautiful villages in Spain that still preserve the way of building and customs of Moorish heritage, with their white houses with flat roofs (“terraos”), their typical chimneys with “hats” and their “tinaos”, typical porches made of stone and chestnut wood. We will access by a winding mountain road located at the foot of the Veleta and Mulhacén peaks to reach the town of Lanjaron, the gateway to the Granada Alpujarra, famous for the quality of its mineral water and the presence of the most important spa in mineral-medicinal waters of Andalusia. Water is also the protagonist in its streets where drinking fountains abound, with the curiosity of having verses written on a tile, by different poets, the majority being written by Federico Garcia Lorca. Before the road begins to narrow and ascend through areas of curves and steep ravines, with views that will take your breath away, we will make a stop in Soportujar. A small town that stands out for its route around witchcraft, with sculptures, museums and symbols throughout the town. As the Galicians say, who by the way were the ones who mostly repopulated this area after the expulsion of the Moors, “I don’t believe in witches, but they actually exist” We are now preparing ourselves, to enter the heart of the Alpujarra, towards the towns of the Poqueira ravine, declared a historical-artistic complex, Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira. All three maintain the white buildings of Moorish origin, with terraos and houses connected to each other by the so-called “tinaos”. We are then facing what are some of the most beautiful towns in Spain, with spectacular corners to photograph and why not to sit and meditate, with birds and flocks as a soundtrack. We will make a stop at a nearby viewpoint to have the best views of the Poqueira Ravine, to contemplate the three aligned towns. We will also visit Portugos and its source of ferruginous waters with medicinal properties (Fuente Agria). Our route continues describing curves between the ravines until we reach Trevelez, one of the highest towns on the peninsula, where its Moorish past is evident in the layout of its streets and it is also famous for hosting the drying rooms where the hams protected by the Protected Geographical Indication “Jamon de Trevelez”. Our last stop, starting the descent, will be in Capileira, on the edge of the Sierra Nevada National Park, where a well-deserved lunch will take place that we know as “Plato Alpujarreño”: Eggs, potatoes, chorizo, blood sausage … in short, mountain food … Before returning to Granada, free time to visit the local craft shops and workshops, where we especially recommend jarapas and wickers, as well as ham and local sweets.
